In case you haven’t seen it yet, Netflix has recently released this series called The Bold Type, which already has 4 seasons out, and it is all about female empowerment. The series is about a trio of friends that work together at a magazine called Scarlet. Though they have different roles within the company, they all started as intern assistants and became friends from there.

I will admit the first half of the first episode gave me the false impression that it was a boring series that I wouldn’t watch all the way through. It wasn’t really until the 20-minute mark on that episode that I realized that that was not going to be the case. Scarlet is a fashion magazine that focuses more on how women can empower themselves through fashion than how they can become more attractive and please men with their looks.

Frankly, I’m still in season one but I am loving it so far. The advantage of not being too far ahead is that there is a smaller risk of spoilers leaking through, but a SPOILER ALERT is being issued either way.

Not only do we get to see the process of how the magazine is made and published, but we also get to see the struggle that can come behind it and the somewhat difficult topics that are approached for and outside of the articles. With Jane Sloan, played by Katie Stevens, having to write an article about the best orgasm ever haven’t ever had one, to her roommate and best friend Sutton Brady, played by Meghann Fahy, being in a secret relationship with a board member of the company, and their mutual friend Kat Edison, played by Aisha Dee, struggling to come to terms with her sexuality.

The story shows real problems women face, sometimes in a brutal way, but with very truthful lenses the entire time. It is the bitter truth of being a woman a lot of the time, but it is astounding how these 3 women stand up for themselves and do their best to stay as true as they can to their empowered self.

I don’t know about you, but now I’m dying to go watch a couple more episodes. This series is definitely on my Netflix must-watch list. How about for you?
